My second performance was the Brimley’s 10th anniversary performance at Earlham. It is a student led a capella group who sang a number of songs without accompaniment. This was interesting as they music still sounded great without accompaniment and we’ve been practicing primarily with an accompanist. My first performance had a band and pianist to play but this performance did not. It was great to hear a wide range of vocal ranges blend together and see how they stood to sing.
I attended a musical performance of “The Divine Miss Bette” in Houston. Catherine Alcorn performed as the lead and used her opera voice to project across the wide audience. When singing, Alcorn stood straight up with her chest high to help with vocal clarity. I enjoyed this musical as I’ve never seen it before and learned about opera singing since I was so close to the lead singer.
I practiced my song again for thirty minutes and have fallen in love with it. I am still not a big fan of my voice when singing it but I am going with it and improving as I go.
I practiced yesterday in my room for thirty minutes. I also recorded myself during this time to see how I sound to other people. I am not liking my voice right now and am feeling this song needs me to sing in an accent. I’m not sure if this is because personal dislike of my sound or because I’ve listened to the song to help learn it and the singer has an accent. I am going to practice again today with vocal projection and then again with possible accents.
I am assessing Lady Gaga and Natalie Dessay. I am able to register when Lady Gaga uses head voice versus chest voice but not so much with Natalie Dessay as she seems to mainly uses head voice with her opera singing.
